The counts this morning
- 1 Little Grebe as noted

- 5 different Herring Gulls: 2 adults and 3 immatures; 3 on the lake, all briefly; 2 W
and
- 25 Wood Pigeons a slightly higher count
- 29 Blackbirds a good count: 5 of these in song at 06:10, but no song after c.06:15
- 4 different single Redwings
- 8 Song Thrushes but only 5 of these in song - too cold? wet?
- 1 Mistle Thrush in song as noted

Saturday, 27th

Continuous slight rain from thick overcast but at least there was no wind and good visibility

Nothing too special, but from my notes
- Little Grebe not seen but heard calling several times: when last seen almost in full summer plumage
- 6 Great Crested Grebes: 2 displaying pairs; an adult and an immature
- 6 Swans: 2 + 2 interlopers (remnants of the 6 + 10 that arrived last evening?) soon seen off
- Water Rail seen in new location for me: under one of the fishing platforms in the NE area
- Coot count crept back over 100 - 103: probably more to do with viewing conditions than a real increase
- 1 Common Gull seen flying S with other gulls
- 1 immature Great Black-backed Gull on the water for a short while: been scarce this winter
- by straining my ears I could heard 9 different Song Thrushes while walking around the lake - only 4 around the lake itself
- Magpie seen carrying stick and roost dispersal noticeably smaller
- just 1 Linnet heard over
- 14 Siskins flying over

Waterbird numbers
- 1 Little Grebe: heard
- 6 Great Crested Grebes: see above
- 1 Heron
- 6 Swans: see above
- 15 Canada Geese in 6 parties
- 4 Gadwall: still 2 pairs

- 51 Tufted Ducks: 32 drakes
- 1 Water Rail: see above
- 8 Moorhens
- 103 Coots
- c.700 Black-headed Gulls: c.250 from the W mostly passing through; then arrival from the N with c.450 on the water

and
- 14 was a low count of Wood Pigeons around the lake
- both Fieldfare and Redwing over

Friday, 26th

Another short pm visit to The Flash and then the lake avoiding the earlier rain

Changes today
- a 6th Great Crested Grebe at the lake: an immature to join the two pairs and the other adult
- party of 16 (6 + 10) Swans flew in to the lake and refused to be scared off by the resident cob
- more Pochard and Tufted Ducks at The Flash; fewer at the lake
- another rather odd-looking immature Herring-type gull with pale almost unmarked tertials and contrasting solid black primaries: ugh!
and of note
- small groups of Jackdaws heading S after 16:00. Perhaps they have moved roost and explains why they have been missing in the mornings recently

Otherwise I'll just report the counts from the water
- 6 Great Crested Grebes
- 18 Swans
- 7 Canada Geese
- 4 Gadwall: 2 pairs as usual
- 21 Mallard: 13 drakes
- 35 Pochard: 18 drakes

- 4 Moorhens
- 96 Coots
- c.650 Black-headed Gulls
- c.220 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
-12 Herring Gulls
- 1 other 'strange gull'!

Wednesday, 24th

Weather / conditions
A very misty start but eventually possible to see all the lake: little in the way of fly-overs though
No ice - broken by the wind yesterday? But plenty of floating debris near the dam at the lake - strimmings?

Highlights
- Best for the day was the Woodcock flushed from near the Teece Drive gate

Otherwise the numbers
- no Little Grebe seen: hiding?
- 5 Great Crested Grebes: 2 pairs and a lone adult along the S side
- 2 resident adult Swans
- 7 Canada Geese: 2 of these flew in
- 4 Gadwall: 2 pairs still present
- 18 Mallard: 11 drakes
- 47 Pochard: 23 drakes
- 94 Tufted Ducks: 60 drakes
- 10 Moorhens
- 96 Coots: the decline continues and first total below 100 this year
- c.20 Black-headed Gulls just visible through mist at 06:30. Later up to 150 managed to locate the lake
- 29 Lesser Black-backed Gulls on the lake by 08:00: just 4 seen flying over
- 6 Herring Gulls at least on the lake c.08:30
- usual low number of Wood Pigeons: 21 around the lake and just 1 fly-over through the mist
- 5 Song Thrushes at least: there seem to be fully established territories and an hour later what are likely the same birds are singing elsewhere
- 2 Redwings flushed from NW area
- almost no corvids heard and seen through the mist: at least 4 Jackdaws heard and 7 Rooks seen directly overhead
- 2 Linnets seen flying E with at least another heard
- 8 Siskins all flying N / W

Tuesday 23 Feb

- 2 Wigeon (a pair) for a while
- high count of Pochard: 55 with 34 drakes
- Tufted Duck numbers back over 100: 104 with 60 drakes
- 1 adult Common Gull briefly: still very much in winter plumage
- Sparrowhawk, Buzzard and Kestrel all seen this morning: first time for all 3 on same day this year
- 2 Ravens over were a site year-tick for me
- 22 Linnets all flying E in 4 groups

(Ed Wilson)

Top

Monday 22 Feb

- 2 Teal: today they were both drakes. Perhaps the same as the birds seen briefly Friday when I thought they might be ducks?
- NO Wrens heard or seen!
- Treecreeper heard at the lake (and then at The Flash heard and seen - co-incidence?)
- 1 of the Greenfinches doing the full circular display flight
- only 5 Linnets but one of these was in song

(Ed Wilson)

Top

Sunday 21 Feb

- nothing of note

Top

(Ed Wilson)

Saturday 20 Feb

- high count of 63 Magpies seen leaving the 2 roosts (but as it is impossible to see the whole of both roosts there were probably even more)
- 27 Siskins feeding in the NE alders
- 58 Linnets flew E over the N shore and none seen in the weedy areas of the construction site

(Ed Wilson)

Above are 4 days from the lake (20th - 23rd) to catch up on: just the trends and the highlights

Not been THAT cold but enough to freeze well over half of both waters and that moved some of the birds about

Overall
- the Little Grebe intermittently at the lake in the NW area
- the Water Rail intermittently at the S end of The Flash (not seen at the lake in this period)
- Coot numbers continue to decline as they start fighting (lower numbers at Trench also)
- gull numbers reduced in the mornings with <100 several mornings (passed the lake on the bus this afternoon and there seemed to be plenty of large gulls)

Friday, 19th

Back to the snow and ice ... well not much ice actually and the weather had cleared before dawn

Best this morning
- Oystercatcher heard and then seen around the lake between 07:00 and 07:50: site year-tick

Other things of note
- 2 Teal flew in among a flock of Pochard that I was counting but were not seen again: seemed to be ducks
- 1 drake Goosander flew W over at 07:15
- 1 Lapwing at least flushed from the SW grass(!) at 06:30
- a female Sparrowhawk flew down the line of Teece Drive: as so often it was the alarm-calling tits that alerted me - their lives depend on seeing Sparrowhawks first! Also a site year-tick for me
- party of 16 Fieldfare flew S

Also walked the Woodhouse Lane area and adjacent fields partly looking for snow scenes for the camera: was VERY quiet
- 1 Buzzard flushed from the stream-side
- 2 Wood Pigeons only! There are bird-scarers in the area, but not that close [plenty in the Newport area!]
- 1 distant singing Song Thrush only
- no winter thrushes
- 1 Bullfinch the only passerine of note apart from
- 3 Siskins over
- 1 Yellowhammer in song - my first song of the year
and
while the streamside scrub has been largely cleared (unlike the fly-tipping) there was cascade of golden rain of Hazel catkins all along the stream

The usual counts in full
- 4 Great Crested Grebes
- 1 Heron
- 4 Swans: in addition to the resident adults 2 1st year bird arrived at 07:09 but were soon seen off
- 8 Canada Geese: 6 throughout; 2 arrived 06:32 and stayed just about 3 hours; more heard in distance pre-dawn
- 2 Teal: both apparently ducks but landed only briefly
- 4 Gadwall: 2 pairs
- 21 Mallard: 12 drakes
- 48 Pochard: 26 drakes
- 75 Tufted Ducks: 43 drakes
- 1 drake Goosander flew over
- 1 female Sparrowhawk over the Teece Drive area
- 1 Buzzard flew low W over the water at 06:47 and was presumably the bird in the SW copse at 07:05
- no gulls roosted
---- >500 Black-headed Gulls: 46 arrived 06:45 but no more until 07:10 after which 188 logged arriving mostly very high from the W / NW; later arrival from the N; counts on the lake were c.350 at 07:50 and c.500 at 08:50
---- >350 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: first of 142 logged flying W / SW at 07:17; later arrival from the N with c.130 at 07:50 and c.200 at 08:45
---- 27 Herring Gulls: 12 logged flying W; later arrival from the N with 1 at 07:50 and 15 at 08:45
- no Water Rails seen or heard (I walked clockwise this morning and harder to see them before they see you this way)
- 4 Moorhens only
- 126 Coots
- 1 Lapwing flushed pre-dawn
- 1 Oystercatcher before 08:00
- 22 Wood Pigeons another low count - but again calling early: from 06:28
- 7 Song Thrushes and only 4 in song this cold morning
- Mistle Thrush in song again
- 2 single Redwings flushed
- 16 Fieldfare flew S
- corvid passage seemed to elude me this morning - very early?
----- 8 Jackdaws were all I logged and I heard no parties at all
----- 19 Rooks with 4 at 06:44 the first I saw, but with no more until 1 at 06:53 perhaps these were the last of the main group?
- 10 Starling in 2 parties unusual overhead
- 15 Siskins mainly flying over
- 3 Reed Buntings: 2 flew off; another in song
and
- 1 Pale Brindled Beauty on a street lamp: this was odd as it was on the same lamp as yesterday but in the position of the 'other' moth that was on this lamp on Wednesday!

Thursday, 18th

Not much of real interest to highlight on another grey and misty morning: at least all the ice had gone

Some things to pull out of the log
- ice gone and Great Crested Grebes back: at least 5 today with 2 pairs at the lake; not seen at The Flash though
- 2 pairs of Gadwall back on the lake - or perhaps I overlooked them yesterday?
- now 9 singing Song Thrushes heard from around the lake: later one singing at a different location but all the others had shut up. None at The Flash today
- turning out to be a good period for Redpoll: 2 in alders at the lake with Goldfinches and Siskins; and 2 over The Flash

Now the other numbers
at the lake (where the poor visibility required 'counting in bits', so scope for over- / under-lap)
- 1 Heron
- 2 adult Swans
- 9 Canada Geese
- 23 Mallard: 3 flew off before dawn; of the other 20, 11 were drakes
- 38 Pochard: 24 drakes
- 88 Tufted Ducks: 47 drakes
- 2 Water Rails: in NE and NW area (the NE bird only seems to be visible before c.08:00)
- 9 Moorhens
- 136 Coots
- 1 male Pheasant strutting around the construction site
- if any gulls roosted they did so in VERY small numbers: just 4 BHGs and 1 HG at 06:40 when light-enough to see
--- c.350 Black-headed Gulls arrived before 07:30 with all but c.30 leaving soon after
--- c.125 Lesser Black-backed Gulls with some passing birds diverting in when they saw the lake in the mist: up to 72 on the water
--- 10 different Herring Gulls, all but 1 immatures
- 20 Wood Pigeons only, all around the lake: first started calling at 06:30
- 3 Redwings at least
- corvids again appear to have been lost in the mist
--- 36 Jackdaws with 24 at 07:02 the only sizeable group
--- 72 Rooks flew over skimming below the cloud at early time of 06:51
- 12 Siskins at least with 5 with the Redpolls (and a single Goldfinch)
- no Linnet flock seen
- no Reed Buntings heard at all
and
- 1 of the Pale Brindled Beauty moths still on the lamps

(Ed Wilson)

Wednesday, 17th

A cold and foggy start this morning: the cloud did lift for a while but the gloom returned. Light E wind and moderate / poor visibility

Back to the ice this morning with the lake >75% ice-covered and more at The Flash. Neither Trench Lock nor Middle Pool had any significant ice

The morning gave me 2 site year-ticks at the lake
- 3 Goosanders (2 drakes and a brownhead) circled and landed at 07:26 in the main melee: they did not stop
- 1 Lapwing flew over at 08:48

Other notes from today
- the Gadwall not seen at the lake
- with all the ice the birds were concentrated and easier to count: Great Crested Grebes and Pochard in lower numbers; but many more Tufted Ducks
- Buzzard near the S end of the dam at the lake again, today sitting on the grassy slope in the SE corner and seemingly reluctant to fly
- my 3rd dead gull in as many days at the lake: today an unmarked winter adult Black-headed Gull on the concrete ramp; yesterday just wing feathers of a Black-headed Gull in the SE wood; and on Monday a wing and some feathers of a LBBG near the hut on the SW shore
- small scattered party of 19 Wood Pigeons over the lake during a clearer spell but otherwise low numbers
and
- 2 of the Pale Brindled Beauty moths were in the same position on the same lamp as yesterday morning - frozen?

Now as usual the other numbers

- 2 Great Crested Grebes only: in the main ice-free area
- 2 adult Swans
- 15 Canada Geese: 8 of these flew in
- 17 Mallard only: 9 drakes
- 27 Pochard: 17 drakes
- 87 Tufted Duck: 54 drakes
- 1 Water Rail: seen in the NE ditch
- 9 Moorhens
- 145 Coots
- c.100 Black-headed Gulls: first heard at 06:40 but too dark to see - not apparently on the lake; 6 by 07:15 and then 85 more logged arriving from the W
- c.100 Lesser Black-backed Gulls as well: 1 by 07:25; influx of c.70 birds at 07:55 from ?; 18 flew SW during a break in the cloud
- 13 Herring Gulls: 6 left to W at 08:28 as a group; later another 7
- 40 Wood Pigeons included the 19 overhead
- 7 singing Song Thrushes: 3 others
- 7 Redwings: 2 roosting along N side; 5 more in Teece Drive area
- great view of 2 Willow Tits along the N side
- corvid passage mainly lost in the mist and low cloud: 57 Jackdaws and 2 Rooks
- 15 Siskins at least, mainly in the alders
- 2 single Linnets heard over: no sign of the flock in the construction site today

(Ed Wilson)

Tuesday, 16th

A better morning for both weather and bird numbers but nothing much of real interest

Fine with only scattered cloud and light / no wind. Slight frost and still some mushy areas of ice / floating weed at E end of the lake

Best sighting was the 2 Redpoll in with 9 Goldfinches and 4 Siskins in alders in the NW part of The Flash

Other things worth comment
- a Buzzard was sitting on the post at the S end of the dam for a while this morning
- distant Mistle Thrush in song at the lake
- not sure whether Wrens have been hit hard by the weather or not: they seem to start singing wherever I am around the lake but then fall silent such that I only ever log <10: in April time I reckon to log 30 - 40! And they are rather late starting: I used to use them as a marker to look for the departing corvids as they seemed to start about 5 minutes before the corvids; but yesterday and today the first Wren song was some minutes after the corvids
- 2 Starlings returned to the roofs around the estate at The Flash
- a party of 3 female Bullfinches munching hawthorn buds in the NE area of the lake: unusual to see no males which usually outnumber the females
- first Reed Bunting song of the year
- my first Rabbit of the year at the lake: there were plenty of tracks in the earlier snow but could I find one!

So on with the totals
at the lake (mainly early, but a brief stop at 11:30 to recheck the gulls)
- 5 Great Crested Grebes only this morning: all adults
- 1 Heron in the NW area throughout: far from regular recently
- 5 Swans: the resident 2 adults; 3 1st year birds flew W together 08:15 - perhaps last year's cygnets?
- 7 Canada Geese: 5 throughout; 2 arrived
- 4 Gadwall: both pairs still present
- 26 Mallard: 14 drakes
- 44 Pochard: 25 drakes - no strimming today and more accurate count
- 55 Tufted Ducks: 36 drakes: many of these, especially the ducks, were continually diving and were hard to count. But fewer than yesterday for sure
- 1 Water Rail in the Wesley Brook
- 6 Moorhens
- 151 Coots
- >750 Black-headed Gulls: only 26 at 06:45; 219 logged arriving from the W after 07:10, though many flew through high SE; c.170 flew NW 07:55; and then c.400 on the water 11:30
- >450 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: none on lake until 3 at 08:15, but c.370 by 11:30 with >200 arriving from the N at 08:50; 81 logged flying W in small V-formations 07:25 - 08:20
- c.20 Herring Gulls: rather scarce today with no more than 10 on the lake
- 58 Wood Pigeons a higher count with 17 singles / pairs seen flying W, mostly rather high
- extended corvid passage with Rooks prominent early and then small groups of Jackdaws
--- 177 Jackdaws and 151 Rooks logged
- tried to log both Magpie roost departures and came up with 21 from the NE and 20 from the NW!
- 12 Siskins at least, with at least 3 small groups
- 23 Linnets in the NW area
- 9 Reed Buntings: 7 of these seen leaving at dawn
and
- 3 moths on the lamps: all Pale Brindled Beauties

(Ed Wilson)

Monday, 15th

Low cloud and misty at the lake, though cleared somewhat later. Above freezing! Light winds

The warmer weather prompted some changes
- Blackbirds in song before daylight and later seen sitting on roof-tops
- 6 Song Thrushes in song
and
- 2 moths on the street lights: a Pale Brindled Beauty and a Dotted Border

Other notables on a generally quiet morning with very few gulls
- all the 'extra' Swans from the freeze have moved off now
- Water Rail in NE area of lake
- party of 9 Redwings near the Teece Drive gate at the lake

A workparty arrived at the lake to finish strimming the face of the dam and this moved all the ducks that I was part-way through counting so some were probably missed

On with the other numbers
- 6 Great Crested Grebes: all adults with 2 pairs in the NW area sparring: and another pair along the N side
- 2 Swans: just the resident adults
- 7 Canada Geese on the lake: birds heard to the E but not seen
- 4 Gadwall: the 2 pairs again
- 28 Mallard: 16 drakes
- 33 Pochard: 20 drakes
- 71 Tufted Ducks: 42 drakes
- 11 Moorhens
- 164 Coots
- <75 Black-headed Gulls: just 54 roosted and very few arrived and all 'instant' counts <50
- no large gulls at all!
- 30 Wood Pigeons: all around the lake - no fly-overs
- first Grey Wagtail heard since the freeze
- good passage of Jackdaws with a large party of at least 180 birds low over the lake at 07:01; but few Rooks
--- 243 Jackdaws and only 2 Rooks logged
- 3 Siskins over in singles
- no Linnet party seen today

(Ed Wilson)

Sunday, 14th

Another full early visit to these sites

Started with broken cloud but most unusually cleared here while it stayed dull and cloudy elsewhere. Chill moderate NNW wind and good visibility

Above freezing and most of the ice now gone. Forgot to mention that while I was away most of the vegetation on the dam-face has been strimmed making it feel rather exposed

Nothing spectacular today but some bits and pieces
- pair of Great Crested Grebes displaying at the lake
- 2 brownhead Goosanders flew in to The Flash
- a Chaffinch in stuttering song at the lake and managing almost complete song at The Flash. My first song in Shropshire this year
- the Linnet party on the construction site at the lake reached and 39 and helpfully flew in to trees to prove no Redpolls lurking in the party
- 11 Reed Buntings at the W end: 9 of these seen flying off W leaving 2 still calling - no song yet
and
- despite the cold the catkins are coming on well and will look great when the sun shines!

Otherwise the usual numbers

- 4 Great Crested Grebes
- 1 Heron
- 3 Swans: the 'spare' adult left to the W
- 2 Greylag Geese flew over
- 13 Canada Geese at various times
- 4 Gadwall: 2 pairs still
- 21 Mallard only: 11 drakes
- 35 Pochard: 21 drakes
- 80 Tufted Ducks: 50 drakes (exact figures!)
- 1 Water Rail heard
- 9 Moorhens
- 177 Coots
- c.200 Black-headed Gulls: c.130 on the lake at 06:45; c.50 from the W after 07:20 mainly all flew through high to the SE
- 33 Lesser Black-backed Gulls logged: none roosted; 3 on the lake; c.30 flying over in small parties
- 4 Herring Gulls: all immatures and all seen flying off
- 1 lone blue morph Feral Pigeon shot W: unusual in winter
- 36 Wood Pigeons another low count
- 2 Song Thrushes in song again, but at different locations this morning
- 1 Redwing heard
- corvid passage was mostly high and far to the E in smaller groups than usual: I logged 185 Jackdaws and 24 Rooks
- 42 Magpies this morning: 22 of these left the NE roost
- 6 Goldfinches over: none on the Alders
- 2 Siskins over
- 39 Linnets as noted above
- 11 Reed Buntings as noted above

(Ed Wilson)

Saturday, 13th

Back from Australia where the temperature gauges showed about the same as the here - but 37C rather than 37F

Visited the lake; The Flash; and then Trench Lock pools

This morning mainly overcast with light snow grains; light NW wind and good visibility. Small amount of thin ice around the edges of all waters

Nothing outstanding this morning apart from the sound of my first-ever Red Jungle fowl here - well chicken anyway! Notables
- 2 pairs of Gadwall still at the lake
- rather more gulls at The Flash than the lake!
- 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers over the lake together in formation was unusual
- only 2 singing Song Thrushes at the lake
- no winter thrushes anywhere
- 48 Magpies seen leaving the roost at the NW end of the lake: rather few seen leaving the normally larger NE roost, but may have been due to positioning / timing
- up to 25 Linnets at the W end of the (non) construction site at the lake

Now the numbers

- 1 Little Grebe
- 4 Great Crested Grebes: pair of adult near N side reeds; immature in NW area; adult near dam
- 7 Swans: resident pair without the cygnets now; 4 + 1 others with 2 + 0 and 0 + 1 chased off
- 11 Canada Geese at various times
- 4 Gadwall: 2 pairs
- 29 Mallard: 17 drakes
- 39 Pochard: 24 drakes
- 84 Tufted Duck: 50 drakes
- 1 Water Rail in NW area above the footbridge
- 7 Moorhens
- 173 Coots: significant reduction since I went away
- c.500 Black-headed Gulls: c.400 roosted and c.100 more later flew in from the W / high NW
- c.90 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: 5 roosted; 13 arrived later; c.70 over but many of these very high and only visible in bins if I was looking that way
- 6 different Herring Gulls on the water at various times
- 30 Wood Pigeons only with no parties and almost none flying over
- just 2 Pied Wagtails heard over
- noisy corvid departure at 07:45 but only c.50 Jackdaws located; also flying very high and with later birds 67 Jackdaws and 11 Rooks logged
- c.10 Goldfinches on the Alder cones in the NW area
- single Siskin in flight

and
- lots of new mole hills
