Tuesday, 29th

- At 12:05 today the Gull roost consisted of c.2000 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 109 Herring Gulls, 1 Yellow-legged Gull, 1 Great Black-backed Gull and c.250 Black-headed Gulls.

The roost was interrupted twice by birds of prey, the first (12:13pm) by a Buzzard that put them all up and then by a Merlin at 12:25pm, which was a pleasant surprise.

Friday, 18th (Report also includes sightings back to 8th January)

Today:
- female / juvenile-type Blackcap in with tit party along N side at the lake this morning.

Rounding up how things have been over the last 10 days or so (This report also includes sightings from The Flash)

- a few immature Great Crested Grebes have started to appear at both the lake and The Flash
- Cormorants have started to reappear, mainly overhead but a few at the lake and my first at The Flash for the winter
- a few Canada Geese at the lake some days; c.35 most days at The Flash
- a party of Greylag Geese made a visit to the lake on 1 day only
- no geese are passing over outbound to feed at the moment
- both resident Swans are looking at the nest sites and that seems to have prompted the birds at the lake to drive off their cygnets
- that said odd cygnets, sun-adults and adults have been chased off the lake most days. But 1 cygnet has been present for 5 days and while at first it was chased and forced to fly it never went anywhere far and now seems to be ignored
- at the lake the 2 Wigeon and 5 Gadwall have been present throughout (though I did not see the Wigeon this morning!)
- a duck Shoveler has been at The Flash on and off for 2 weeks
- numbers of Pochard and Tufted Duck change daily. At The Flash <20 of each. At the lake c.15 - 25 Pochard and between 40 and 100 Tufted Duck
- Goosanders daily at The Flash, up to about 30: small numbers seen flying over the lake presumably en route c.08:00
- the Goosander numbers have NOT increased with the recent rain and the apparent correlation between the amount of sediment in the river and the number of birds at The Flash has not held true
- most days I see Sparrowhawk, Buzzard or Kestrel at the lake; sometimes all 3. Sparrowhawk regular at The Flash
- at least 3 Water Rails at the lake, not easy to see!
- Coot numbers at the lake peak around 200: some days there appear to be many fewer - think they may be hiding in the reeds?
- seen no Lapwings or Golden Plover this year: too mild? too wet? wrong crops in fields?
- most days there is no gull roost at the lake: up to 1000 Black-headed Gulls come in early and then leave
- large gulls are rather scarce both at the lake and overhead. Some arrive from the tip area at c.09:00
- for some reason there seem to be almost as many Herring Gulls as Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- most days a few Great Black-backed Gulls; and possible Yellow-legged Gull [not looked at any afternoon roost when the Glaucous Gull has been present]
- by 10:00 there are often as many gulls on The Flash - even a Great Black-backed here
- there has been a party of c.400 Wood Pigeons to the E of the lake, but otherwise very few. Occasional 'song' at the lake (a pair mating at Newport!)
- Great Spotted Woodpecker most days at the lake: NW area best
- the wintering Meadow Pipits at the lake seem to have moved on
- a few Redwings most days at the lake; distant Fieldfare occasional
- lots of tits around with Coal, Blue and Great all in song. Yet to find Willow Tit this year
- a Treecreeper one morning with a tit party at the lake
- a huge outbound party of Starlings flies E over the lake c.08:00 many mornings. Hard to say how many birds and seems to be getting larger.>10000?
- lots of Siskin'sabout at the lake (c.30 most days) and The Flash (c.10).
Just 1 Redpoll and very few Goldfinches
- party of Bullfinches at the lake started to attack the hawthorn buds - the NE area

My species count for the lake this year stands at 62
- had 3 species of moth so far - Winter Moth, Mottled Umber and Brindled Beauty

Quick report from Priorslee Lake for today, Saturday

Splendid 1st winter Glaucous Gull present at 07:45: may have roosted. Gone by 08:30 but it (or another!) at 08:45 still present at 09:45

Also seen and photographed was this Yellow-legged/Caspian Gull. I was rather distracted by the Glaucous Gull. I would normally have logged it as a Yellow-legged Gull of unidentified race, but it did at the time and does in the photos look rather large and I am wondering about Caspian Gull.

Any thoughts welcome. Been through all the stuff from last year without reaching any conclusion!

Supporting cast: 2 Wigeon; 5 Gadwall; >20 Pochard; >70 Tufted Duck (some flew off); 1 Water Rail; 6 Great Black-backed Gulls; >150 Herring Gulls; 6 Siskin's

Earlier a drake Goosander and a 2nd winter Common Gull but they both left

Friday, 4th

Another morning struggling to see things on the lake let-alone try and see interesting fly-overs. Tried the NE area of the lake for the 'dawn chorus' as the S side was rather noisy with the M54 traffic. Then completed the anti-clockwise lap before doing another in what passed for daylight

Then a walk all the way around The Flash - the only real way to get a proper count of the Goosanders

Star sightings this morning were 3 (and perhaps a 4th) Water Rails at Priorslee Lake

No addition to the 2007 Year List

Added to the Priorslee Lake Year List
- Heron

Other highlights were at the very misty Lake
- good number of ducks again: 1 Wigeon; 5 Gadwall; 53 Mallard; 26 Pochard; and 106 Tufted Ducks
- large roost of gulls with about 2500 large gulls including over 100 Herring Gulls
- single adult Yellow-legged Gull again

Thursday, 3rd

Evening - 6:15pm

Just as I was coming down the hill towards the Lake (from Priorslee) a Barn Owl flew across the road. It had come along the Northbank, crossed the road and up across the fields to the east. My first in 12 years at the lake.

Morning

Update from a cold Priorslee Lake

At the lake added a year-tick of Yellow-legged Gull; and a lake year-tick of Feral Pigeon

I don't keep a life-list for The Flash but single immature Great Black-backed Gull and 3 Ravens overhead may have both been new!

Back to the lake
- 3 pairs of Great Crested Grebes with 2 displaying
- lots of ducks (there were fewer at The Flash) with 2 drake Gadwall; a pair of Wigeon; 62 Mallard (40 drakes); 25 Pochard (18 drakes); 93 Tufted Duck (47 drakes)
- big gull roost with 2000 Black-headed Gulls and 500 Lesser Black-backed Gulls with a few Herring Gulls
- by 09:00 all these had gone and been replaced: now 170 Lesser Black-backs and an amazing 160 Herring Gulls (as well as the Yellow-legged Gull and 2 Great Black-backed Gulls)
- at least 10000 Starlings left the roost somewhere to the S and flew N just before 08:00. Small party of 9 stragglers!
- over 20 Siskin's again

(Ed Wilson)

Wednesday, 2nd

In better conditions all the ducks were visible
- pair of Wigeon
- 5 Gadwall (4 drakes)
- 15 Pochard
- 68 Tufted Duck

Rather few gulls with only c.40 Black-headed Gulls at roost and a maximum of c.400

When the large gulls started to arrive at c.08:45 there were rather few and more Herring Gulls (23) than Lesser Black-backed Gulls (13). A high number / proportion of Herring Gulls has been evident here and at The Flash all week

c.4000 Starlings flew N from a roost (in the Stafford Park area?) at 08:05

2 species added to my year-list - Stock Dove and Redpoll

5 species added to the Priorslee Lake year-list (all seen around Caer Caradoc yesterday) - Buzzard, Kestrel, Sky Lark, Jay, Rook

Tuesday, 1st

The start of the Year List at a very foggy Priorslee Lake and Flash

Highlights from the lake:
- 4 Cormorants could find the lake in the fog
- 1 Water Rail in NW area (1 in NE area on 31 December)
- 2 drake Gadwall (4 drakes and 1 duck on 31 December)
- 1 drake Wigeon (pair on 31 December)
- usual parties of Siskin's

Hard to count things in the poor visibility - Ended up with 37 species on the year list from here
