After logging no terns at Priorslee Lake or Flash last year my 3rd species already this year
After a rained-out visit to Nedge I route past the lake and thought I out to stop and look. And there it was - a tern flying close by the dam. A quick check and there was no dark wedge in the very plain and pale upperwing
At this point the bird flew off down the other end. After I had parked the car properly I managed another brief look as it again passed the dam and was able to see the narrow dark trailing edge of the underwing as well
At this point it disappeared but as I was still in the car I had restricted view. I jumped out but could see it no more
Ideally I would have liked some better / longer views to get double confirmation, but I am happy I saw enough to log this an Arctic rather than Comic Tern
Went to The Flash afterwards to check it wasn't there: it wasn't

Great morning at the Lake this morning
- Spotted Flycatcher along N side at 07:30 though I may have glimpsed it earlier
- 5 Black Terns flew off NE at 07:50: not sure how long they had been there as I was engaged in trying to read the rings of the 17 Swans by the dam. I only noticed them when I looked up, but it was probably no more than 10 minutes
The Black Terns are only my second-ever record from the lake
Supporting cast
- Willow Tit nest hole located: while trying to take a picture of something other than an empty hole 2 Goldcrests visited me
- certainly 8 and probably 9 singing Reed Warblers , with another bird seen when it popped in to view while I was looking at a singing Garden Warbler that was puzzling a Dunnock
- the Garden Warbler was singing in one ear as a Blackcap sang in the other - great for comparison

- The pairs of Great Crested Grebes have 2 young each.
- There have been at least 6 broods of Coot so far, but only 5 juveniles are extant: there seem to be too many pairs and the parents fight and kill the chicks!

Tuesday, 6th
- a Common-type tern flying away E before 05:00. It was too dark and too far away to identify it. Not sure where it came from - pretty sure that it was not from the lake
- Also on the lake a Common Sandpiper . These have been almost daily for the last 2 weeks - up to 3 birds.

Swan Lake
Today there were just 13 Mute Swans being herded into the NE Bay by the resident Cob, with the Pen presumably in Wesley Brook.
