Size: Grass Snakes grow to between 70-120 cm in length. Females are larger than the males, and can occasionally reach 200cm.
Location: Grass snakes can be found over much of Europe except fin Scotland and Ireland. They are widespread in England and Wales, but in recent years there numbers have reduced.
Habitat: Can be found in almost any habitat as long as it is damp. Areas to look for are river banks, ponds, ditches, hedgerows, woodland margins, farmland and meadows.
Further Information : By their very name Grass snakes are normally green in colour, with black spots and a light yellowy ring around the neck. However their colour does vary to their distribution and colours can range from black to a very light colouration.
Grass snakes feed predominately on
tadpoles, frogs and toads, as well as fish and newts. Very occasionally they will take mice and small birds. Most hunting is done underwater, and like most snakes their prey is swallowed alive.
